Class Descriptions for Spring
School Year 2022 - April 4th to June 17th, 2022
● Play Lab 1 (PreK- 1st) with playlab133 staff:. Based on their interests, energy, and mood, staff will lead this small group of students in activities such as story time, sing-a longs, circle and board games, outdoor fun, dance, arts & crafts, and more.
●Homework Lab 2 (2nd-5th) with playlab133 staff: Under the direction of playlab133 staff, we will provide a safe environment for kids to spend their after-school time doing homework in a supervised setting, with quiet arts & crafts, board games available for those who finish early.
ENRICHMENT CLASSES
MONDAYS:
● CAPOEIRA 1 (PreK- 1st) with ACAI Maestro Lampreia & Lee. Allied Capoeira Arts Initiative: Capoeira is a fun way for children to develop gross motor skills, improve coordination, strength, and flexibility, as well as discipline and social skills. This is a unique opportunity for children to develop an appreciation for music, culture, and themselves while learning a martial art. Children will learn capoeira movement through familiar and child-friendly games, and learn the Portuguese language and history through music. A uniform is required and must be purchased from the vendor.
● CERAMICS 1 (PreK- 1st) with Created By Kids. This class explores the various ways in which artists use clay, working to create both sculptural and functional forms. Students will review classic hand-building techniques that form the foundations of all hand-build pottery and will produce several projects using these techniques alone, but will also expand on them to include figure working and other sculptural processes. Kids will learn various glazing techniques. They will make and take home kiln-fired ceramic projects.
● ALL THINGS ANIME 2 (2nd-5th) with Created By Kids. In this Anime class, we'll take drawing to the next level! Students will learn how art begins with an idea and a sketch, following a step-by-step process to create unique works of art, all while learning important technical skills like proportion, shading, perspective, and design. We'll explore different drawing styles like Kawaii, Anime, and Manga while simultaneously using a variety of art mediums (i.e. graphite of varying hardness or softness, inks, gouache, and watercolor) and how they are used to enhance our illustrations. This class is sure to be an animated one!
TUESDAYS:
● KINDER DANCE 1 (PreK- 1st) with Kinderdance. is a developmental dance program that blends physical skills and creative movement, fitness and dance with educational concepts. The emphasis is in building self confidence and self esteem. Children will learn the basics of ballet,dance, gymnastics, creative movement, modern dance and multi cultural dance class, The Kinderdance program provides children with the potential to be creative, express themselves through movements while building strong muscles and social skills. . Children are exposed to skills-driven, high-energy and fun-filled instruction delivered by coaches and dance instructors who are trained and certified in our Kinderdance programs and share our passion for developing young children
● ADVENTURES OF ANIMATION 1 (PreK- 1st) and 2 (2nd-5th) with CinemaKids. In this hands-on, creative, and collaborative program, children will utilize a variety of materials to build props, characters, and fantastical mini movie sets to feature in stop-motion animation films.
● MULTICULTURAL MODERN DANCE 2 (2nd-5th) with Kinderdance. Kindercombo is a developmental dance, motor skill, music, and fitness program. This program blends physical skills and creative movement, fitness and dance with educational concepts. children are involved in a dance class combining Modern Dance and Multicultural techniques. Students are taught foundational skills and terms which will then grow over the course of the dance year to include more advanced movement ideas. Along the way our Kindercombo certified instructor will include opportunities for creative thinking and movement exploration as we nurture each child’s independence and imagination. Children are exposed to skills-driven, high-energy and fun-filled instruction delivered by coaches and dance instructors who are trained and certified in our Kinderdance programs and share our passion for developing young children
●SOCCER 2 (2nd-5th) off-site at FORCE SOCCER Studios, this program is designed to provide a significant amount of meaningful touches on the ball in each one hour training session. The studios’ highly experienced staff will ensure each child has a great experience and leave happy, tired and ready to return! Students will be escorted by playlab133 staff to and from this class. Pick up will be at PS133.
WEDNESDAYS:
● Yoga 1 (PreK- 1st) with Ms. Nelson. Through a unique mix of poses, games, breath, and mindfulness - Kids will discover their strength and self-esteem. This playful class is also a great opportunity to connect with others for partner poses, story-based yoga adventures, and confidence-building exercises. Yoga equips kids with healthy ways to meet everyday challenges through strong minds and healthy bodies. Yoga for Kids has been proven to decrease tension, anxiety, and negativity – it gives children the tools to stay fit, focused, calm, and happy.
● ADVENTURE SERIES - DRAMATIC PLAY with Child’s Play 1 (PreK- 1st) Kids unleash their imaginations and tap into their intrinsic sense of play in this vibrant theater class. The session is anchored around a theme and a weekly adventure. We use literature as a springboard to act out our favorite characters and engage in rich imaginative exercises: They soar into magical realms, embark on ocean voyages and make heroic animal rescues. Theater games, improv, and sophisticated dramatic play support learning and meaningful connections with their peers. Best of all, these classes help young children explore empathy, literacy and boost their self-esteem in a fun, joyful environment.
● BASKETBALL with Ms. Nelson( 2nd-5th) This program is designed to provide a significant amount of developmental basketball skills, such as dribbling, shooting, passing, etc. in each one hour training session.There will be time to play fun basketball activities and games at the end of each session! I will make sure that each child has a great experience and leave happy, tired and ready to return the following week! Please send children with sneakers and loose clothing!
● SCHOOL OF ROCK (1st - 5th) off-site at School of Rock, Brooklyn. School of Rock believes that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music. Students will learn the fundamentals of music and performance through a set list specially crafted to cover the basis of rhythm, melody, harmony and playing in a band. This unique approach to music instruction teaches students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love. With musical context in a fun environment, all students are given the knowledge they need to pursue their passion for music. Students will be escorted by playlab133 staff to the class. Parents will have to pick up their child at the off-site location.
THURSDAYS:
● MIXED SPORTS with Mr. Blatt 1 (PreK- 1st) Young students will practice a variety of age appropriate sports, develop gross motor skills and coordination while staying fit and learning to play in collaboration with others
● ART SAFARI 1 (PreK- 1st) with Private Picassos Young artists will explore the wild kingdom through animal-inspired art activities. Possible projects include papier mache dinosaur eggs, stripes and spots printmaking, and bird nest sculptures!
● SCIENCE THROUGH ART 2 (2nd-5th) with Private Picassos Budding Picassos and young Einsteins unite! Kids will go on an adventure through the intersecting worlds of science and art in this class. We’ll get messy with homemade chalk, Gyotaku printmaking, fossil creation and much more!
● ROBOTICS with Ms. Harry 2 (2nd-5th) This enrichment program will consist of using coding with robotics. Students will be able to program Dot and Dash to follow their own unique codes. Dot and Dash are small mobile robots with personalities. Students can program Dash at different speeds and directions and Dot can light up and be used to play games with.
● RUN4FUN (2nd-5th) Held in Prospect Park, this program will focus on individual running, pacing, and fitness challenges, running games, team building activities, endurance, and trails, exploration, and destination runs. Students will be picked up from school by two adult Run4Fun staff members and brought to Prospect Park. Pick up after the session is at Prospect Park between 5:00-5:15pm at the Run4Fun tree (through the Garfield street entrance).
FRIDAYS:
● STORYBOOK THEATER 1 (PreK- 1st) with Brooklyn Acting Lab. Have you ever seen a parade of fish dance in the light of a campfire? Or crept with tigers through a shadowy jungle? Join us as we explore animals from all over the world on a magical and mysterious safari! This class invites children into the world of dramatic play through storytelling! Teachers collaborate with students to explore the worlds of storybooks through games, exercises, and art-making. With an emphasis on the basic structures of a story as well as music-making, this class will leave your students excited to continue reading, playing, and imagining for years to come. Imaginations run wild in this physical and interactive class while developing social, physical, and cognitive skills.
● GARDENING 1 (PreK- 1st) with Brooklyn Seed’s Eman Rashid. A gardening and nature class that teaches kids how to grow food indoors and outdoors. Kids are taught about native and invasive plants and their effect on wildlife. They learn about the environment by adopting and caring for neighborhood trees. In winter, kids learn to sprout food in water and in soil. They also make bird feeders, explore pickling, and take one houseplant and multiply it into many.
● “ENCANTO” MUSIC AND STORIES 2 (Kindergarten-5th) with Brooklyn Acting Lab, This class invites children into the world of dramatic play through storytelling!
